<subtitle id="0:0:34"> Alan shared some of his experience and some of his</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:0:37"> thinking in a pre read and the purpose</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:1:19"> say I have no idea where this conversations going</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:1:46"> from that for a second but just to get everybody</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:1:49"> to take a look I thought</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:1:52">about building a little bringing little fake fire</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:1:55"> here because we're actually doing</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:1:58"> what human beings did about 150,000</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:1"> years ago which is gathering around a</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:4"> campfire listening to stories</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:7">and if you think about it our civilization</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:10"> is actually based on writing and it</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:13"> was based on science it's based on a whole bunch of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:16">that have almost nothing to do with stories and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:19"> have almost nothing to do with the world discourse so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:22"> it is very very difficult I think to</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:25"> do other than make</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:28"> gestures at immense</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:31"> complex problems that we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:34"> have it's very hard to talk about them without</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:37"> being able to even play with simulations</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:40"> of them I feel like you're making them more guilty about</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:43"> not reading the pre read yeah well</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:46"> I view this as a commercial not for</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:49"> reading my piece but I did write it take</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:52">the trouble to write it just for this session</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:55"> but that piece was in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:2:58"> lieu of giving a talk which would give</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:1"> you the context but not allow for discussion so I</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:4"> and what I like to do when I teach classes</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:7"> and university is I write what</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:10"> I think the student should read and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:13">we use the class to find out what what they're thinking about</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:16">know and what they don't know and I'd like to do that here</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:19"> so I think the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:22"> a couple of keys here are</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:25"> the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:28"> there's a lot of method</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:31"> in the world and a lot of the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:34"> way the world is is the result of methods</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:37"> that are still fairly common sense</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:40"> thinking in the small everybody</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:43"> being industrious in the small and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:46"> the problem is that the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:49"> communication systems of every kind including physical</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:52"> have clogged</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:55"> up almost every finite resource</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:3:58"> that we have and so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:1">quotation I like you to take away with you was</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:4"> done by Einstein some years</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:7"> ago and he said we cannot solve our</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:10"> problems with the same levels and kinds of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:13">thinking we use to create them this is the number one</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:16"> thing I'd like you to take away I mean</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:19"> how does how does that then translate</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:22"> to what Andrew is saying and this</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:25"> even we've been talking about today needing</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:28"> to kind of scale up yeah so when</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:31"> I hear people saying we we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:34"> have to get away from linear that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:37"> worries me just because there's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:40"> no known linear real linear relationship</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:43"> in the universe even</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:46">the ones that we treat of as linear in science</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:49"> they're all actually nonlinear they</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:52"> can all be taken up to a place</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:55">where whatever their predictability seemed to</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:4:58"> be to our common sense suddenly</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:1"> goes awry we're much much better</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:4"> and if you think of these exponential curves</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:7"> most important thing to think about them is to</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:10"> take the place where they're getting started and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:13"> look at it in our timescales and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:16"> realize oh that looks exactly</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:19"> like it's linear it took Charles</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:22"> Keeling the name everybody should know</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:25"> here because he was the first real scientist</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:28"> who did the first real measurements that gave</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:31"> us global war warming as a problem</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:34"> all the way back in the late 50s so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:37"> we've actually we've actually had</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:40"> the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:43"> who actually had a warning</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:46"> from enough data collected</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:49">see that the curve that he was measuring in carbon</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:52"> dioxide build-up was not</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:55"> either flat</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:5:58"> or linear but it was actually an exponential</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:1"> and so we had adequate warning to start</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:4"> dealing with the global warming problem as</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:7"> early as 1963 and there</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:10"> are many many things that could have been done if</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:13"> most people's imaginations were</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:16"> informed by science to be able to understand his results</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:19"> they weren't they still aren't</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:22"> today and you can tell because even though people are</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:25"> talking about global warming they're talking about it in an absolutely</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:28"> ridiculous way now</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:31"> is way too late for any kind of market solutions</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:34"> when there are big countries that can buy carbon credits up</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:37"> the kazoo forget about it the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:40"> climate can be easily toppled</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:43"> before people run out of money we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:46"> have to take Einstein seriously and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:49"> reason I'm here I think is</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:52"> because I was lucky</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:55">be a participant in one of these enormous</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:6:58"> revolutions the one</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:1">brought you personal computing and the internet</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:4"> I was part of the community</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:7"> I was a group leader at Xerox PARC I invented</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:10"> the graphical user interface that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:13"> you use I had a lot to do with tablet</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:16"> computers and networking and so forth</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:19"> and that was part of a community</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:22"> which was very similar to for instance</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:25">the community here in the United States that developed radar</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:28"> which was the prime technology that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:31"> won the war for the Allies rather than</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:34"> for the enemy I think just sorry but those</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:37"> are those examples that you're pulling out and Xerox</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:40"> PARC you would say that is an example of the Einstein quote</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:43"> in action there's a new level of thinking</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:46"> that's all yes in all of these so in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:49"> this document I picked a simple one like the Empire</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:52"> State Building which went up in about a year</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:55"> started starting from demolition and planning</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:7:58"> to occupancy now which at the time was</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:1"> impacted impossible</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:4"> I think the Chinese are doing it now but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:7"> I picked radar I picked</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:10"> Bletchley Park that's another one</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:13"> where people were so worried about</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:16"> the Germans that they finally</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:19"> said where are the boffins where are</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:22">people who actually know something about the physical universe we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:25"> need to finally pay attention to</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:28"> them and they did and they did it in an exemplary fashion on</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:31"> both sides of the Atlantic that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:34"> was a huge factor also in winning</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:37"> that war I picked</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:40"> the Manhattan Project just</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:43"> as an example of something really big that can be done really</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:46"> quickly can you explain the man what the Manhattan</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:49"> Project was the atomic bomb project</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:52"> commend this book which</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:55"> is in the references of this thing this is a book by the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:8:58"> guy who headed it major-general grows it's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:1"> called now it can be told that's a very</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:4"> matter-of-fact book because the guy was an engineer but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:7"> it's not a popular book but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:10"> in fact it just matter-of-factly says</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:13"> well he realized it wasn't</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:16"> about the scientists knew</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:19">as needed and what was needed was fissionable material</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:22"> and nobody knew how to do it and so at</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:25"> the end of this thing he had about 700,000 people</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:28"> he had set up whole new towns including</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:31"> bringing in doctors and schoolteachers</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:34"> and he</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:37"> mobilized a hundred</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:40"> basically 1% of all of the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:43"> money the u.s. spent in the war was spent on</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:46"> this project to just get it done and they</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:49"> violated most principles of what</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:52"> business people think are prudent ways of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:55"> doing things but the violations were</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:9:58"> the things that allowed them to be successful and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:1"> so this so the second</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:4"> thing I'd like you to take away is yeah</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:7"> when you have something big to do</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:10"> besides the fact that it's nonlinear</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:13">and you need to do something different you don't</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:16"> want to abandon rational ways of doing things you</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:19"> just don't want to let the rational ways of doing things get</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:22"> in the way of things that seem crazy because</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:25"> the most important thing to understand is pretty much</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:28"> everything we do with the physical world today would</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:31"> be a burnt at the stake offense 500</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:34"> years ago what changed</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:37"> was the context Newton was one of the big factors</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:40"> in changing that context and all</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:43">sudden in the new context you could think thoughts that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:46"> were literally crazy according</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:49"> to and so this is the thing to realize that whenever</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:52"> you think you're thinking reasonably about something</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:55"> that is really difficult beware</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:10:58"> so having heuristics</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:1"> set up to say how how</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:4"> are we actually allocating our intellectual</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:7"> capital here how much of this are</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:10"> we trying to do with top-down planning</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:13"> how much of it are we actually trying to do</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:16"> by getting highly</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:19"> talented crazy people to try and think up new</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:22"> things that are not in our top-down ways of doing things how</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:25"> much problem-solving are we doing versus how</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:28">much problem finding are we doing so I just want to jump</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:31"> in there because I feel like you know you did in your essay</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:34"> you do lay out a few examples of projects</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:37"> that you think have demonstrated this just</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:40"> a level up in thinking and yes but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:43"> you also as in one way to think of it is</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:46"> there are a lot of different Sciences and the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:49">that the different Sciences find is rather specific</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:52"> to the sciences but the methods in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:55"> science are much more uniform across</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:11:58"> because they have to do with how do you go looking at four</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:1"> things how do you judge what</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:4"> you're doing how</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:7"> do you get new ideas how do you be open at the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:10"> first level so you because otherwise you'd be</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:13"> dogmatic if you didn't admit every crazy idea in science</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:16"> but if you're going to have every crazy idea there</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:19"> you could you have to do what most democracies don't do</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:22"> which is to go to have a next</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:25"> level which is the best criticism that anybody has</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:28"> ever invented science works because it's a two-level</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:31"> system most government systems don't work because</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:34"> they try and have something that is like</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:37"> a religion that has generally agreed on</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:40"> and you really want to be crazy at one level and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:43"> very very sane at the next level and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:46"> can I can we come back then to some of those examples because</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:49"> you know when you're talking about crazy projects</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:52"> it'd be up for crazy projects employed</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:55"> great people the truly great people and give them</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:12:58"> freedom don't try and organize top-down what are some of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:1"> those can you expand on some of those but it's respects it's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:4"> again it's one of those things where I wish it</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:7"> were more simple be</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:10"> and it's not that there aren't heroes</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:13"> there are but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:16"> the hero's journey is a trope that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:19"> misleads most people who</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:22"> don't fool around with this stuff it's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:25"> not really about people in garages so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:28"> but however there are heroes and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:31"> it's not about small groups but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:34"> there are small groups but if you look at</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:37"> the huge jumps not</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:40"> just in simple scaling but in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:43"> context and science is a good example</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:46"> itself it works because it is</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:49"> a community where the community passes</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:52"> ideas around freely it</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:55"> doesn't know who's going to do the next good</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:13:58"> thing and it relies</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:1"> on the community to help keep</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:4"> things that are used for new things</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:7"> to be vetted rather</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:10"> carefully so you have this mixture</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:13">things which is really hard it doesn't wrap into a</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:16"> religion and it doesn't wrap into the way most companies</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:19"> are organized so it's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:22"> very difficult it frightens most</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:25"> c-level executives and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:28"> a frighten the executives of Xerox I</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:31"> can tell you when they came out to Palo Alto</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:34"> see how we were doing what we were doing they thought we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:37"> were out of control we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:40"> weren't out of control any more than the internet is out of control</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:14:43"> the internet has has grown to 50 billion</subtitle>
 +

<subtitle id="0:15:4">networks and all of those things you had to abandon go</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:15:7"> to something more like a biological model and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:10"> that looked out of control to most people</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:13"> who had wetted their</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:16"> life to a particular way of doing things so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:19"> the number one thing here is when somebody talks about scaling</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:22"> it's it's not the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:25"> number it's when does</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:28"> the scaling become different</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:31"> and when are you going to notice</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:34"> that the scaling has become different that's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:37">the big deal and that is what you need heuristics for when</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:40"> you're trying to take something that works in the small</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:43"> and trying to employ it in the large</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:46"> for instance almost any particular</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:49"> effort in saving the planet</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:52"> from pollution or global warming</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:55"> all of these things really has to be done</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:15:58">that all of these systems are actually rather tied</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:1"> to each other and we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:4"> don't know what all of those systems are the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:7"> climate simulations that have been done have</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:10"> all been in the direction of measurement</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:13"> following behind the simulations but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:16"> in almost every case the actual</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:19"> global warming that's been going on has been been worse</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:22"> than the simulations predicted that means that the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:25"> simulations aren't capturing some gotchas</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:28"> that could be really terrifying in another</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:31"> 20 years to go from really terrifying</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:34"> gotchas to may be</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:37">some communities that give you hope today if</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:40"> there are any and you know in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:43">our preparation I'm just like you're saying this in the context of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:46"> you being from the UK with</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:49"> what's going on here and me being from the US with</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:52"> what's going on here yeah okay in the US</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:55"> you mentioned the Genelia labs</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:16:58"> Camellia and that is a current</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:1"> yes Jamelia is a current lab</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:4"> it's funded in part by the Hughes</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:7"> foundation they did a very</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:10"> good thing one of the spark</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:13"> plugs is a guy one of my favorite guy I used to</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:16">molecular biologist and my misspent youth in</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:19"> one of my heroes was Sydney Brenner just</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:22"> died recently a Nobel Prize winner from South</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:25"> Africa but he was fundamental</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:28"> to DNA here in Cambridge and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:31"> he was one of the spark plugs to get</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:34">hings started in many places in the world and Genelia labs</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:37"> near Washington DC is one of them yeah</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:40"> it's it's a pretty impressive and can you just maybe</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:43">just thinking about some of those characteristics what</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:46"> is it what is it about Genelia labs that you like well I think that</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:49"> I wrote down 19</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:52"> of them in the in this document I</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:55"> think the number the number</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:17:58"> one thing is as</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:1"> the immensity of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:4"> the difficulties</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:7"> starts impinging on us</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:10"> we have to go away from</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:13"> funders trying to pick goals it's</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:16"> natural it's their money they're responsible</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:19"> but all the good funders in history let</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:22">people who are going to do the work pick the goals</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:25"> what the funders did was to put</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:28"> together a vision which</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:31"> is not the same as a goal and it's not the same as a mission</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:34"> a vision is a picture of a future state</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:37"> of things which is would</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:40"> be really nice if we had so for instance</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:43"> the one that I worked under the sentence</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:46"> was the destiny of computers are</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:49"> to become enter an interactive</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:52"> intellectual amplifiers for</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:55"> all humans on earth pervasively</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:18:58"> networked worldwide the guy</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:1">who set up this funding and the community that did it would</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:4"> not peel it down to a hard</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:7"> goal he said no no we'll get everybody who</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:10"> thinks they can do something against this vision will</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:13"> fund them and if we're</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:16"> if we got given what we're funding and the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:19"> level of aspiration we</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:22"> have if we get 30% success we'll</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:25"> change the world qualitatively</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:28"> the result of that funding did</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:31"> have about maybe</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:34"> 40% success but it's almost every</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:37"> technology that you use today in computing and</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:40"> the return on the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:43"> investment just from Xerox PARC so Zarek's Park</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:46"> is maybe I don't know 120 million dollars</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:49"> the return on investment from Xerox PARC</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:52"> has been about 40 trillion dollars so</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:55"> this flabbergast business people think they're in business</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:19:58">to make money but they aren't they're just trying to make a few bucks</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:1"> safely way you make money is</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:4"> take advantage of the deep knowledge we have about the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:7"> universe and what can actually be done</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:10"> with it by people who are not trying</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:13"> to do too much planning ahead of time uncertain</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:16"> enacts you talk about funding and that being</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:19"> that kind of unrestrictive miss you know having the vision to aim</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:22"> for and having less restrictions tied to money yeah</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:25">like there was a sympathy the other McArthur</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:28"> foundation in the u.s.</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:31"> foundation yeah confusing this</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:34"> is the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and I now</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:37"> that I live over here I think of the one</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:40"> in the US as the other but</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:43"> what they do is</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:46"> pick I don't know 20</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:49"> people 30 people a year that they think</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:52"> show promise and they give them a five-year</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:55"> no-strings-attached grant of</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:20:58"> $625,000 period they</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:1"> don't worry the people can go off and do nothing</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:4"> however it happens that people that have art</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:7"> in their blood can't not do</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:10"> nothing it's a calling it's like being</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:13"> called to the ministry or so you don't have to worry</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:16"> about the people who are gonna make the</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:19"> thing here they want to do this the best thing can</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:22"> ever happen to them is for somebody to fund them to</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:25"> follow their instincts and yeah</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:28"> 70 percent of them are going to be not going to play</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:31"> out but like in baseball and some other</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:34"> sports those errors are not</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:37"> errors but overhead it's really</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:21:40">important to think of when you're funding edge of the art research</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:43"> that the things that don't work out</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:46"> are not failure they're just overhead</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:49"> for trying to do something really difficult and if</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:52">you're aiming high enough the successes you get like</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:55"> Xerox</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:21:58"> rocks the company made</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:1"> return-on-investment themselves just on</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:4"> the laser printer that we invented the era of about a factor</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:7">250 paid for park hundreds</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:10"> of times over and the world</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:22:13"> made a return on investment much much larger than</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:16"> than that so the</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:19"> this is kind of the inverse black swan idea</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:22"> right Black Swan you don't worry about how rare</subtitle>
 +
<subtitle id="0:22:25"> it is what you worry about is how big the disaster is</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:28"> going to be when you get it the inverse Black</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:31"> Swan the whites the super whites or the gold</subtitle>

<subtitle id="0:22:34"> Swan the gold Swan is don't</subtitle>

this is Alan hey everyone so welcome Alan
okay I am
delighted and terrified
to be sat here talking to Alan
and as you've heard we've been talking
during the day Alan has seen it and done it much of his
work at Xerox PARC has literally
touched every single one of us you know through
the technology that we have in our pockets and we use in
our homes before the event
Alan shared some of his experience and some of his
thinking in a pre read and the purpose
of that pre read was so that we could really get into the content
with the next 25 minutes so for
those of you who haven't read the pre read you should all
be feeling look extremely guilty at the moment no
don't make them feel bad but just to help the
next few minutes how many people actually did
read this oh well done
okay okay
the rest of you need to stay after class
but
what we're here to talk about with Alan is
what it will really take to scale
up the circular economy and I can quite honestly
say I have no idea where this conversations going
to go it will be a ride Alan has
props anything could happen in the next 25 minutes
please do tweet in questions using the hashtag summit
2019 we will be capturing them and
chucking them to Alan to get us started
ask you the kind of most obvious question in
PARC well I have
to have to start by eeling away
from that for a second but just to get everybody
to take a look I thought
about building a little bringing little fake fire
here because we're actually doing
what human beings did about 150,000
years ago which is gathering around a
campfire listening to stories
and if you think about it our civilization
is actually based on writing and it
was based on science it's based on a whole bunch of
that have almost nothing to do with stories and
have almost nothing to do with the world discourse so
it is very very difficult I think to
do other than make
gestures at immense
complex problems that we
have it's very hard to talk about them without
being able to even play with simulations
of them I feel like you're making them more guilty about
not reading the pre read yeah well
I view this as a commercial not for
reading my piece but I did write it take
the trouble to write it just for this session
but that piece was in
lieu of giving a talk which would give
you the context but not allow for discussion so I
and what I like to do when I teach classes
and university is I write what
I think the student should read and
we use the class to find out what what they're thinking about
know and what they don't know and I'd like to do that here
so I think the
a couple of keys here are
the
there's a lot of method
in the world and a lot of the
way the world is is the result of methods
that are still fairly common sense
thinking in the small everybody
being industrious in the small and
the problem is that the
communication systems of every kind including physical
have clogged
up almost every finite resource
that we have and so
quotation I like you to take away with you was
done by Einstein some years
ago and he said we cannot solve our
problems with the same levels and kinds of
thinking we use to create them this is the number one
thing I'd like you to take away I mean
how does how does that then translate
to what Andrew is saying and this
even we've been talking about today needing
to kind of scale up yeah so when
I hear people saying we we
have to get away from linear that
worries me just because there's
no known linear real linear relationship
in the universe even
the ones that we treat of as linear in science
they're all actually nonlinear they
can all be taken up to a place
where whatever their predictability seemed to
be to our common sense suddenly
goes awry we're much much better
and if you think of these exponential curves
most important thing to think about them is to
take the place where they're getting started and
look at it in our timescales and
realize oh that looks exactly
like it's linear it took Charles
Keeling the name everybody should know
here because he was the first real scientist
who did the first real measurements that gave
us global war warming as a problem
all the way back in the late 50s so
we've actually we've actually had
the
who actually had a warning
from enough data collected
see that the curve that he was measuring in carbon
dioxide build-up was not
either flat
or linear but it was actually an exponential
and so we had adequate warning to start
dealing with the global warming problem as
early as 1963 and there
are many many things that could have been done if
most people's imaginations were
informed by science to be able to understand his results
they weren't they still aren't
today and you can tell because even though people are
talking about global warming they're talking about it in an absolutely
ridiculous way now
is way too late for any kind of market solutions
when there are big countries that can buy carbon credits up
the kazoo forget about it the
climate can be easily toppled
before people run out of money we
have to take Einstein seriously and
reason I'm here I think is
because I was lucky
be a participant in one of these enormous
revolutions the one
brought you personal computing and the internet
I was part of the community
I was a group leader at Xerox PARC I invented
the graphical user interface that
you use I had a lot to do with tablet
computers and networking and so forth
and that was part of a community
which was very similar to for instance
the community here in the United States that developed radar
which was the prime technology that
won the war for the Allies rather than
for the enemy I think just sorry but those
are those examples that you're pulling out and Xerox
PARC you would say that is an example of the Einstein quote
in action there's a new level of thinking
that's all yes in all of these so in
this document I picked a simple one like the Empire
State Building which went up in about a year
started starting from demolition and planning
to occupancy now which at the time was
impacted impossible
I think the Chinese are doing it now but
I picked radar I picked
Bletchley Park that's another one
where people were so worried about
the Germans that they finally
said where are the boffins where are
people who actually know something about the physical universe we
need to finally pay attention to
them and they did and they did it in an exemplary fashion on
both sides of the Atlantic that
was a huge factor also in winning
that war I picked
the Manhattan Project just
as an example of something really big that can be done really
quickly can you explain the man what the Manhattan
Project was the atomic bomb project
commend this book which
is in the references of this thing this is a book by the
guy who headed it major-general grows it's
called now it can be told that's a very
matter-of-fact book because the guy was an engineer but
it's not a popular book but
in fact it just matter-of-factly says
well he realized it wasn't
about the scientists knew
as needed and what was needed was fissionable material
and nobody knew how to do it and so at
the end of this thing he had about 700,000 people
he had set up whole new towns including
bringing in doctors and schoolteachers
and he
mobilized a hundred
basically 1% of all of the
money the u.s. spent in the war was spent on
this project to just get it done and they
violated most principles of what
business people think are prudent ways of
doing things but the violations were
the things that allowed them to be successful and
so this so the second
thing I'd like you to take away is yeah
when you have something big to do
besides the fact that it's nonlinear
and you need to do something different you don't
want to abandon rational ways of doing things you
just don't want to let the rational ways of doing things get
in the way of things that seem crazy because
the most important thing to understand is pretty much
everything we do with the physical world today would
be a burnt at the stake offense 500
years ago what changed
was the context Newton was one of the big factors
in changing that context and all
sudden in the new context you could think thoughts that
were literally crazy according
to and so this is the thing to realize that whenever
you think you're thinking reasonably about something
that is really difficult beware
so having heuristics
set up to say how how
are we actually allocating our intellectual
capital here how much of this are
we trying to do with top-down planning
how much of it are we actually trying to do
by getting highly
talented crazy people to try and think up new
things that are not in our top-down ways of doing things how
much problem-solving are we doing versus how
much problem finding are we doing so I just want to jump
in there because I feel like you know you did in your essay
you do lay out a few examples of projects
that you think have demonstrated this just
a level up in thinking and yes but
you also as in one way to think of it is
there are a lot of different Sciences and the
that the different Sciences find is rather specific
to the sciences but the methods in
science are much more uniform across
because they have to do with how do you go looking at four
things how do you judge what
you're doing how
do you get new ideas how do you be open at the
first level so you because otherwise you'd be
dogmatic if you didn't admit every crazy idea in science
but if you're going to have every crazy idea there
you could you have to do what most democracies don't do
which is to go to have a next
level which is the best criticism that anybody has
ever invented science works because it's a two-level
system most government systems don't work because
they try and have something that is like
a religion that has generally agreed on
and you really want to be crazy at one level and
very very sane at the next level and
can I can we come back then to some of those examples because
you know when you're talking about crazy projects
it'd be up for crazy projects employed
great people the truly great people and give them
freedom don't try and organize top-down what are some of
those can you expand on some of those but it's respects it's
again it's one of those things where I wish it
were more simple be
and it's not that there aren't heroes
there are but
the hero's journey is a trope that
misleads most people who
don't fool around with this stuff it's
not really about people in garages so
but however there are heroes and
it's not about small groups but
there are small groups but if you look at
the huge jumps not
just in simple scaling but in
context and science is a good example
itself it works because it is
a community where the community passes
ideas around freely it
doesn't know who's going to do the next good
thing and it relies
on the community to help keep
things that are used for new things
to be vetted rather
carefully so you have this mixture
things which is really hard it doesn't wrap into a
religion and it doesn't wrap into the way most companies
are organized so it's
very difficult it frightens most
c-level executives and
a frighten the executives of Xerox I
can tell you when they came out to Palo Alto
see how we were doing what we were doing they thought we
were out of control we
weren't out of control any more than the internet is out of control
the internet has has grown to 50 billion
nodes now without any central control
but it has control it's a different
kind of control in order to get
the internet we had to abandon
the kind of thinking that went into switched telephone
systems and hub control
networks and all of those things you had to abandon go
to something more like a biological model and
that looked out of control to most people
who had wetted their
life to a particular way of doing things so
the number one thing here is when somebody talks about scaling
it's it's not the
number it's when does
the scaling become different
and when are you going to notice
that the scaling has become different that's
the big deal and that is what you need heuristics for when
you're trying to take something that works in the small
and trying to employ it in the large
for instance almost any particular
effort in saving the planet
from pollution or global warming
all of these things really has to be done
that all of these systems are actually rather tied
to each other and we
don't know what all of those systems are the
climate simulations that have been done have
all been in the direction of measurement
following behind the simulations but
in almost every case the actual
global warming that's been going on has been been worse
than the simulations predicted that means that the
simulations aren't capturing some gotchas
that could be really terrifying in another
20 years to go from really terrifying
gotchas to may be
some communities that give you hope today if
there are any and you know in
our preparation I'm just like you're saying this in the context of
you being from the UK with
what's going on here and me being from the US with
what's going on here yeah okay in the US
you mentioned the Genelia labs
Camellia and that is a current
yes Jamelia is a current lab
it's funded in part by the Hughes
foundation they did a very
good thing one of the spark
plugs is a guy one of my favorite guy I used to
molecular biologist and my misspent youth in
one of my heroes was Sydney Brenner just
died recently a Nobel Prize winner from South
Africa but he was fundamental
to DNA here in Cambridge and
he was one of the spark plugs to get
hings started in many places in the world and Genelia labs
near Washington DC is one of them yeah
it's it's a pretty impressive and can you just maybe
just thinking about some of those characteristics what
is it what is it about Genelia labs that you like well I think that
I wrote down 19
of them in the in this document I
think the number the number
one thing is as
the immensity of
the difficulties
starts impinging on us
we have to go away from
funders trying to pick goals it's
natural it's their money they're responsible
but all the good funders in history let
people who are going to do the work pick the goals
what the funders did was to put
together a vision which
is not the same as a goal and it's not the same as a mission
a vision is a picture of a future state
of things which is would
be really nice if we had so for instance
the one that I worked under the sentence
was the destiny of computers are
to become enter an interactive
intellectual amplifiers for
all humans on earth pervasively
networked worldwide the guy
who set up this funding and the community that did it would
not peel it down to a hard
goal he said no no we'll get everybody who
thinks they can do something against this vision will
fund them and if we're
if we got given what we're funding and the
level of aspiration we
have if we get 30% success we'll
change the world qualitatively
the result of that funding did
have about maybe
40% success but it's almost every
technology that you use today in computing and
the return on the
investment just from Xerox PARC so Zarek's Park
is maybe I don't know 120 million dollars
the return on investment from Xerox PARC
has been about 40 trillion dollars so
this flabbergast business people think they're in business
to make money but they aren't they're just trying to make a few bucks
safely way you make money is
take advantage of the deep knowledge we have about the
universe and what can actually be done
with it by people who are not trying
to do too much planning ahead of time uncertain
enacts you talk about funding and that being
that kind of unrestrictive miss you know having the vision to aim
for and having less restrictions tied to money yeah
like there was a sympathy the other McArthur
foundation in the u.s.
foundation yeah confusing this
is the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and I now
that I live over here I think of the one
in the US as the other but
what they do is
pick I don't know 20
people 30 people a year that they think
show promise and they give them a five-year
no-strings-attached grant of
$625,000 period they
don't worry the people can go off and do nothing
however it happens that people that have art
in their blood can't not do
nothing it's a calling it's like being
called to the ministry or so you don't have to worry
about the people who are gonna make the
thing here they want to do this the best thing can
ever happen to them is for somebody to fund them to
follow their instincts and yeah
70 percent of them are going to be not going to play
out but like in baseball and some other
sports those errors are not
errors but overhead it's really
important to think of when you're funding edge of the art research
that the things that don't work out
are not failure they're just overhead
for trying to do something really difficult and if
you're aiming high enough the successes you get like
Xerox
rocks the company made
return-on-investment themselves just on
the laser printer that we invented the era of about a factor
250 paid for park hundreds
of times over and the world
made a return on investment much much larger than
than that so the
this is kind of the inverse black swan idea
right Black Swan you don't worry about how rare
it is what you worry about is how big the disaster is
going to be when you get it the inverse Black
Swan the whites the super whites or the gold
Swan the gold Swan is don't
worry about stuff that doesn't work out
if worry about what the percentage that needs
to work out that will pay for everything else a hundred times
over and goose the human race into
a next level of thinking well
I can't think of a better way to finish our

presentation to the Disney executives on

platinum eggs instead of gold and I
said no you guys are just completely
missing the point here if you've got geese that lay golden
eggs you can convert them into coins you can convert
them into platinum let the freaking geese
lay the frigging eggs

there's a whole load of more exciting things in

in a roundhouse and
many of you are probably not engineers but
some might be you may not be

were just those turntables that the
engines were on were some of the most beautifully
engineered things done in the nineteenth century and
it's a kind of a
